Which continent is known to contain the most countries?

Africa is known to contain the most countries of any continent, with a total of 54 recognized sovereign states. This diversity in nations is largely due to the continent's colonial history, which resulted in a variety of political boundaries that have led to numerous independent countries after the decolonization movements of the mid-20th century. Each of these countries maintains its own government, culture, and identity, contributing to the continent's rich tapestry of cultures and languages. In contrast, while Asia is the largest continent in terms of land area and population and has many diverse cultures and languages, it has fewer recognized sovereign countries compared to Africa. Europe has a relatively smaller number of countries, though it is densely populated and culturally varied. South America, while home to some large nations, such as Brazil and Argentina, still has fewer countries overall compared to Africa.
