East Timor recently gained independence from what country?

East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, gained its independence from Indonesia. This process was marked by a long struggle for autonomy that began when Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975, shortly after Portugal, the former colonial ruler, decolonized the territory. After years of conflict and international attention, a referendum in 1999 allowed the East Timorese population to vote for independence, leading Indonesia to officially recognize their sovereignty in 2002. While Portugal was the colonial power before Indonesian occupation, the question specifically asks about the country from which East Timor gained independence in recent history, making Indonesia the correct answer. The other options, including Australia and Malaysia, were not directly involved in East Timor's path to independence in the same context.
